She Taught Love movie review by movie16

Arsema Thomas may not be a fan of romance, but that hasn’t stopped her from making a mark in the genre with her role in She Taught Love. In a candid interview, Thomas shares her thoughts on love stories and the significance of her role as Mali Waters, an accomplished sports agent who captivates Frank Cooper (played by Darrell Britt-Gibson), a struggling actor dealing with his own demons. While Thomas may not be into romance herself, she acknowledges the privilege of being part of a narrative that adds to the lineage of Black romantic dramas like Love & Basketball and Poetic Justice.

The complexity of Mali's character, as portrayed by Thomas, is what sets the film apart. Mali isn’t just a love interest; she’s a nuanced figure—strong, guarded, yet vulnerable. Thomas speaks to the depth of the love story between Mali and Frank, one that’s tender yet real, with arguments and moments of imperfection that aren’t often seen in on-screen romances. "It felt like a revolutionary act," Thomas says, referring to the decision to maintain the characters’ complexities, which often get diluted in the editing process.

Thomas also highlights the importance of showing a Black woman as the one who is saving the man, a narrative shift that feels closer to reality for many Black women but is rarely depicted without racial trauma. Her portrayal emphasizes that Black women deserve to see themselves in love stories where they are celebrated for their strength and vulnerability.

Reflecting on her experience, Thomas finds joy in seeing how Mali and Frank’s relationship evolves from a place of guardedness to tenderness. The chemistry between the characters grows organically, leading to a moment of true vulnerability that Thomas hopes resonates with audiences. The realness of the relationship, with its flaws and tenderness, offers a refreshing and honest depiction of love.
