Moana 2

Moana 2 (also known as Vaiana 2 or Oceania 2 in certain markets) is an eagerly awaited American animated musical adventure film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios for Walt Disney Pictures. A sequel to the 2016 hit film Moana, this installment is directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller in their feature directorial debuts. Christina Chen and Yvett Merino serve as producers, with the screenplay written by Jared Bush and Miller.

Returning to the cast are Auliʻi Cravalho, Dwayne Johnson, Temuera Morrison, Nicole Scherzinger, Rachel House, and Alan Tudyk. Joining them are new voices, including Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda, Rose Matafeo, David Fane, Hualālai Chung, Awhimai Fraser, and Gerald Ramsey.

Development

Initial plans for a follow-up to Moana began as a long-form Disney+ streaming series. However, by February 2024, the project had been reimagined as a theatrical sequel. David Derrick Jr., who had been attached as both writer and director, continued with the project, joined later by co-directors Jason Hand and Dana Ledoux Miller. By May, Christina Chen and Yvett Merino were announced as producers, replacing Osnat Shurer. In June, Jared Bush returned to co-write the screenplay, with Dana Ledoux Miller taking over as co-writer in August.

The sequel brings back composers Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa‘i, who worked on the original film, while Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear replace Lin-Manuel Miranda as additional songwriters.

Premise

Set three years after the events of the first film, Moana receives a mysterious call from her wayfinding ancestors, setting her on a new adventure. Reuniting with Maui, she assembles her own crew to voyage across the vast seas of Oceania. Their mission is to break a curse cast by the god Nalo on the hidden island of Motufetu, a place integral to the ocean’s interconnected communities. Along the way, they face both familiar adversaries like the Kakamora and new foes, including Matangi, a formidable underworld goddess.

Cast and Characters

  • Auliʻi Cravalho as Moana, the determined and adventurous daughter of Chief Tui and Sina. Cravalho will also reprise her role in the Hawaiian-language version.
  • Dwayne Johnson as Maui, the bold and shapeshifting demigod.
  • Temuera Morrison as Tui, Moana’s father and the leader of Motunui Island. Morrison will also voice Tui in the Māori-language dubbing.
  • Nicole Scherzinger as Sina, Moana’s caring mother and Motunui’s Chieftess.
  • Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda as Simea, Moana’s little sister.
  • Rose Matafeo as Loto, a clever and quirky member of Moana’s wayfinding crew.
  • David Fane as Kele, a grumpy farmer turned crew member.
  • Hualālai Chung as Moni, a fan of Maui who joins the crew.
  • Rachel House as Tala, Moana’s grandmother, who returns in her spirit form as a manta ray.
  • Awhimai Fraser as Matangi, a mysterious and dangerous goddess. Fraser will reprise her role in the Māori-language version.
  • Gerald Ramsey as Tautai Vasa, Moana’s ancestor.
  • Alan Tudyk as Heihei, Moana’s comically dim-witted pet rooster.

Additionally, Dwayne Johnson’s daughters, Jasmine and Tiana, lend their voices to Moana’s fan club, the “MOANA-BE’s.”

Production

Development

The project was first announced in December 2020 as a Disney+ musical comedy series titled Moana: The Series, slated for release in 2023. By early 2024, Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that the series had been reworked into a theatrical sequel titled Moana 2. Original contributors, including Derrick and producers Chen and Merino, remained attached as it transitioned into a feature film.

At the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June 2024, further details about the team were revealed, including the involvement of Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa‘i. Additionally, Eric Goldberg, who animated Maui’s tattoos in the first film, returned to oversee hand-drawn animation sequences alongside Mark Henn.

Casting

Shortly after the sequel was announced, Auliʻi Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson were confirmed to reprise their iconic roles as Moana and Maui. Johnson, who had been involved since the project’s early stages, expressed his excitement, stating, “We all really went for it. If we’re making a sequel to something so beloved, we wanted to go above and beyond.”

The expanded cast includes new characters, such as Moana’s sister Simea and crew members Loto, Kele, and Moni. Returning cast members include Rachel House as Tala and Nicole Scherzinger as Sina.

Animation

Animation for Moana 2 began at Disney’s Vancouver studio, marking its first-ever feature-length project, with pre-production handled at the Burbank headquarters. The Vancouver team worked on developing cutting-edge visuals, while Goldberg and Henn led a team of apprentices to revive the tradition of hand-drawn animation for Maui’s tattoos.

Release Information

Moana 2 had its world premiere in Kapolei, Hawaii, on November 21, 2024. The film is scheduled for release across the United States on November 27, 2024, distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.
